| No kidding: nets guard near end of road Jason Kidd trade rumors are hardly new but this time they're probably for real. Nets President Rod Thorn and the guard have made no secret of the seemingly obvious incentives for both parties to want a deal before the Feb. 21 NBA trading deadline. Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter the younger parts of the Big Three have expensive contracts. Kidd has had enough of playing well for a team that is inconsistent at best and a deeply flawed team at worst saying that for a competitive team. "It used to be if I got a triple-double that was an automatic win. That's just not the case now. We tried to make this work. We've found out it doesn't. It's time for us all to move on." Rod Thorn said that he's and that the Nets are "not in the process of giving players away." The Nets probably should have moved Kidd last season. The holdup in a reported deal with the Lakers was Andrew Bynum whom the Nets were wise to covet and the Lakers were wise to hold on to. Nevertheless this Nets team has plateaued. In fact it's on its way down. Carter probably isn't going to win a championship with the Nets but at least he brings excitement and credibility to a team trying to make its way to Brooklyn. Jefferson is enjoying his best season and while not a top-tier star in this league is about as close as you get without being one. The Nets have lost nine straight with Kidd at the controls so what can get worse? Even if the Nets don't get optimal return for Kidd a main concern of Thorn's they'll get something. A fast track to the draft lottery can happen with or without the future Hall of Famer. To make matters worse for the Nets they may have some issues moving to Brooklyn. The poor financial market coupled with ongoing lawsuits could Forest City Ratner from securing financing for Atlantic Yards and new Nets arena. | Last night's action: rising stock For one night at least Jason Kidd did his best to help the Nets get maximum value in a trade. The Nets also proved that even they couldn't find a way to lose a weak team playing without its best player (Michael Redd). The fans cheered loudly for Kidd before the game so they either want him gone and are cheering his efforts to leave or love him so much they want him to go. So endeth the Nets' nine-game losing streak. Kidd played well down the stretch scoring seven points in the final minute and 42 seconds. Another winnnable game awaits at Miami on Friday. Only a little more than three weeks until the trading deadline. Watch Kidd while you can! Defense is clearly in short supply on the West Coast. The Knicks blew a 100-91 lead and lost the second straight game on a five-game Western swing. Isiah Thomas wasn't pleased. "Our lack of execution down the stretch particularly the last five six minutes of the game we just totally lost all composure " Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said. Maybe even the Islanders are beginning to feel the effects of the dump that is Nassau Coliseum. Forget the Nets! Move the Islanders to Brooklyn. They trailed 3-0 until late in the second period. Then Sean Bergenheim and Bryan Berard scored some goals to make it close and give those kids who came out something to cheer about. Rick DiPietro gave up four goals and he gave zero interviews during the game. The Islanders haven't won in five games at home. Who needs Sidney Crosby? Not the Penguins. Maybe the Devils do. A shorthanded Penguins team took care of the Devils who suddenly look mortal at home. Michael Rupp scored his first two goals of the season and had his first points in 35 games. That didn't help the Devils from blowing 1-0 and 2-1 leads. Curses to the All-Star break! The Rangers had won two in a row but that streak ended Tuesday. Brendan Shanahan had the lone Blueshirts goal Last night's action: rising stock
